EP31: The Human Intelligence and Provinciality
What if the danger we fear in artificial intelligence also asks us to confront the limits we impose on human intelligence?
In this episode of Dots of Thoughts, Emeka Okereke turns the anxiety that “AI will kill us all” towards a question about humanity itself: how can human intelligence evolve while we continue to raise one another within pockets of provinciality?
Our technological inventions bring us into ever closer contact. Yet much of our education, politics and inherited understanding of identity prepares us for a world organised through separation. We learn to see ourselves as belonging to one nation, one culture, one side of a border. We learn to measure knowledge through hierarchies, to compete with one another, and to pursue a happiness that may exclude our neighbour. What happens when these habits persist in a world whose interconnections become harder to deny?
Drawing on his travels, his experience as a parent, and reflections on colonialism, language and belonging, Emeka considers what children can teach adults about discovery and encounter. He asks what we fail to recognise when a person’s face becomes the limit we place on their knowledge, and when centuries of knowledge carried in language go unacknowledged.
The distinction between contact and encounter runs through this reflection. Being brought together does not, by itself, mean that we acknowledge one another as living producers of knowledge. For Emeka, the provinciality that prevents this acknowledgement also risks leaving human intelligence behind its own inventions—and helping to create the conditions in which AI could become dangerous.
Offered as a thought experiment, the episode invites us to consider how we might learn to be in difference, bringing our creativity and sensitivity to the ways we inhabit an already interconnected world.
“How can we learn to be in a world where we are connected with each other in all our myriad differences?”
